Back to California Parks & Recreation Society

TR Logo

Explanation

The TR Section adopted a philosophical position in 1982, which was consistent with that adopted by the National Therapeutic Recreation Society.  That position states that:

. . . therapeutic recreation is the provision of recreation services
and opportunities to assist individuals in establishing and expressing an independent leisure lifestyle.  Accordingly, the primary purpose of therapeutic recreation would be to assist the client to eliminate leisure barriers, develop leisure skills and attitudes, and to optimize leisure functioning.  This position states that the uniqueness of therapeutic recreation is that it utilizes three specific types of services as a part of a comprehensive approach toward enabling leisureability.  The three types of services offered are identified as therapy, leisure education, and recreation participation.

The TR Section Logo clearly identifies TR as therapeutic recreation.  The design incorporates a people orientation that designates our profession as a human service.  The person leans forward indicating growth and progress forward.

The use of the two colors signifies the two ends of the continuum of therapeutic recreation services.  Blue is associated with therapy and accessibility, and green identifies the tie with the park and recreation field and the end goal of an independent leisure lifestyle.

It is the feeling of the TR Section that this logo best reflects our philosophy, scope of service and skills that are unique to our profession.  Its simplistic design, yet pertinent meaning, guarantees its universal application.

The TR Section Board of Directors adopted the logo in 1984.  The logo is registered by the Sate of California as a Service Mark.  The TR Section is protected against infringement of the Service Mark by all California State laws pertaining to Service Mark Registration.  Violations of these laws may result in court action.
